Cowboys' Trevon Diggs Expected to Open Season on 53-Man Roster Amid Knee Injury Rehab

Zach BacharAug 23, 2025

Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer revealed that he expects cornerback Trevon Diggs to begin the 2025 season on the team's 53-man roster despite dealing with a knee injury, per NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

The Cowboys could potentially keep Diggs on the physically unable to perform list and open a roster spot in the meantime, but he'd then be required to miss the first four games of the regular season.

The two-time Pro Bowler underwent season-ending left knee surgery in Dec. 2024.

Diggs was optimistic about his recovery from the procedure after the Cowboys' 31-13 win over the Atlanta Falcons to wrap up the preseason on Friday night.

"I feel way better than I should feel," Diggs told ESPN's Todd Archer.

While his Week 1 outlook is uncertain, he's focused on increasing his activity in practice before his status is determined.

"I want to practice a lot," Diggs explained, via Archer. "I want to get as much practice as possible, get the game reps in, get the live reps in. I haven't practiced in a while, so I feel the practice will tell a lot more where I am."

Even if the 26-year-old isn't ready in time for Dallas' regular-season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, the team will want to keep him on its 53-man roster if he can suit up before Week 5.

After earning Pro Bowl nods in 2021 and 2022, Diggs' career has been hampered by injuries.

He's appeared in just 13 of a possible 34 regular-season contests over the past two years, suffering a torn ACL in 2023 before dealing with knee issues last season.

Still, he should provide a boost to Dallas' secondary if he can come off the PUP list for the start of the team's 2025 campaign.
