Why 49ers Traded for Brian Robinson Jr. Reported and Fantasy Impact on McCaffrey

Adam WellsAug 23, 2025

Despite some panic about Christian McCaffrey coming off an injury-ravaged 2024 season, the San Francisco 49ers' acquisition of Brian Robinson Jr. had more to do with the health status of their other running backs.

Appearing on the Saturday morning edition of SportsCenter, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler explained the 49ers traded for Brian Robinson Jr. to give them another healthy running back:

"For San Fran it was pretty easy, they were decimated by injuries in the backfield behind Christian McCaffrey. So, they just wanted depth, they wanted a strong, goal-line, short-yardage back who can get you some touchdowns. So, B-Rob walks in there in a good situation. They paid a little bit of his $3 million salary, Washington covered some of it. Win-win for San Fran."

The 49ers sent a 2026 sixth-round draft pick to the Washington Commanders in exchange for Robinson on Friday. Isaac Guerendo just returned to practice on Tuesday after missing time with a shoulder injury. Patrick Taylor Jr.'s season ended that same day when he was placed on injured reserve after suffering a dislocated shoulder in the Aug. 16 preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Jordan James, a fifth-round pick in the 2025 draft, suffered a broken finger early in training camp that required surgery.

Fowler's note that the 49ers wanted another player to use in goal-line situations will be music to the ears of fantasy managers.

By all accounts, McCaffrey has had a terrific camp to this point. Head coach Kyle Shanahan recently said the 2023 Offensive Player of the Year looks explosive and has regained some of the speed that was missing from his game last season.

Since McCaffrey is coming off a 2024 season when he was limited to just four games due to a calf, Achilles and knee injuries, the 49ers will presumably want to avoid putting too much on his plate right from the start.

That could open the door for Robinson to vulture some points away from McCaffrey. Whatever the reason was for Robinson falling out of favor in Washington, he had no problem finding the end zone.

Robinson scored 17 total touchdowns over the past two seasons combined. His overall volume will go down playing behind McCaffrey, but the 49ers can take advantage of his 228-pound frame when they get close to the goal line.

McCaffrey is comfortably going in the first round in PPR leagues with an average draft position of No. 7 overall.

Robinson is coming off the board as the RB33, sandwiched between Quinshon Judkins and Jordan Mason. Robinson has more value than that because he's also a good receiver out of the backfield with 56 catches over the past two seasons.

The 49ers have a lot of questions about their defense after allowing the fourth-most points in the NFL last season. If that continues in 2025, their offense will have to do a lot of work to keep them competitive.

There's no reason to think Robinson can't be a quality flex player for your fantasy team on a regular basis, with the upside of being a solid starting running back if McCaffrey misses any time.
