Braves' Austin Riley Out for Rest of 2025 MLB Season After Core Injury Surgery

Paul KasabianAug 21, 2025

The Atlanta Braves announced that third baseman Austin Riley will miss the remainder of the 2025 season after undergoing core injury surgery.

The 28-year-old Riley has played all seven of his MLB seasons with Atlanta, winning the World Series with the Braves in 2021.

Riley was phenomenal from 2021-2023, averaging 36 home runs and 99 RBI per season while hitting .286 (.878 OPS). He won two Silver Slugger awards and made two All-Star Games during that stretch and finished top seven in the NL MVP voting all three years.

Unfortunately, injuries have hindered Riley over the past two seasons. In May 2024, Riley missed two weeks with a strained muscle near his rib cage. Three months later, Riley was hit on his right hand with a fastball while batting against the Los Angeles Angels, and he missed the rest of the regular season.

On July 12 of this season, Riley suffered a strained abdomen and missed two weeks. He returned on July.

On Aug. 2, Riley suffered an injury during a game against the Cincinnati Reds at Bristol Motor Speedway when he tagged shortstop Elly De La Cruz near home plate. Atlanta put Riley on the 10-day injured list two days later with a lower abdominal strain.

It's been an incredibly unlucky two years for Riley, a great player at his best. Thankfully, he's expected to be ready for the start of spring training next year, so hopefully he enjoys a season of good health in 2026.
