Tiger Woods to Lead PGA Tour Committee to Modernize Golf, 'Goal Is Significant Change'

Joseph ZuckerAug 20, 2025

The PGA Tour announced Wednesday the formation of the Future Competition Committee, which is intended to find "the optimal competitive model that enhances the PGA TOUR's value to fans, players and partners."

Fifteen-time major champion Tiger Woods will be the committee's chairman.

PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp said that "the goal is not incremental change" but rather "significant change."

Andrew Beaton of the Wall Street Journal reported changes could include tweaking the number of events on the PGA Tour calendar or having more exclusive fields from the start.

Beaton added that Rolapp and Woods both "emphasize that the Tour's meritocracy will remain a fundamental tenet." Still, Woods acknowledged there could basically be winners and losers thanks to the changes.

"It's going to affect everyone," he told Beaton. "Some not as beneficial as others."

This is another step in the PGA Tour's broader evolution, which was sparked by the arrival of LIV Golf in 2021. With major stars leaving for the rival circuit, the tour had to work harder to appease its constituents and keep fans engaged.

Prize money increased in a big way, and "Signature Events" complement the four annual majors. With smaller fields, those tournaments are intended to be battles between the best in the world.

When LIV first broke onto the scene, many wondered whether the PGA Tour faced an existential threat. Instead, the tour has maintained a decisive edge in terms of television ratings. The contrast is particularly stark when it goes head-to-head against LIV.

The status quo seems to be working quite nicely for the PGA Tour, and golf is historically a sport rooted in its traditions. Still, the tour is nonetheless brainstorming ways it can stay ahead of the curve.
