Fever's Sophie Cunningham Out for WNBA Season After Suffering Knee Injury vs. Sun

Scott PolacekAug 19, 2025

The Indiana Fever have dealt with injury concerns throughout the season, and they were dealt another blow Tuesday.

Indiana announced guard Sophie Cunningham will miss the remainder of the 2025 campaign with the right knee injury she suffered during Sunday's contest against the Connecticut Sun. The team also signed guard Shey Peddy to a seven-day hardship contract and released guard Kyra Lambert in corresponding moves.

The injury occurred when Sun guard Bria Hartley fell into Cunningham's right knee while driving the lane.

The Fever guard immediately went to the ground and had to be helped off the floor.

It is yet another setback for the team that had high aspirations heading into the season. The most notable injury was to Caitlin Clark, as the face of the franchise hasn't played since July 15 because of a groin concern.

What's more, Aari McDonald (right foot) and Sydney Colson (left knee) suffered season-ending injuries, leaving Indiana thin in the backcourt with Clark and now Cunningham out.

Indiana is still in playoff positioning at 19-16 despite all the setbacks. It is in sixth place but just a half-game ahead of the Golden State Valkyries. The Fever have nine games remaining in the regular season to solidify their spot in the playoffs.

They will miss Cunningham as they attempt to do just that, as she averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.0 steals in 30 games and 13 starts. She also connected on 43.2 percent of her three-point attempts, which is particularly valuable when opposing defenses focus on Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston.

Next up for Indiana is two straight games against the Minnesota Lynx on Friday and Sunday.
