How Superstars Spend the Offseason

Laura DeptaJul 17, 2015

What do you do with time off work? Relax, play some golf, maybe take a little trip? Well, LeBron James goes to movie premieres, and Jonathan Toews goes wakeboarding with the Stanley Cup.

Other than attending the ESPYs, here are what some superstar athletes do to kill time in the offseason, listed from least extravagant to most. In other words, which of these offseason activities are the farthest away from something regular folks might do on a vacation?

I know I've never ridden on a banana boat with Dwyane Wade.

Play Golf

1 of 15

What's a relaxing vacation without a round or two of golf?

OK, so golf isn't the most extravagant of offseason activities, but when it's Tom Brady, Keegan Bradley, Luke Donald and uh, Michael Jordan out on the links, that packs some star power. The foursome met up at the Baker's Bay Golf & Ocean Club in the Bahamas in March, and as it turns out, Brady's athletic talent goes beyond just throwing footballs.

Work out

2 of 15

One thing athletes generally do a lot of is work out—yes, even in the offseason. Check out Dez Bryant, for instance. The wide receiver's Instagram is loaded with videos and photos of his workout regimen. Looks like Bryant just might earn that $70 million the Dallas Cowboys just signed him for.

Give Back

3 of 15

Many athletes also spend time giving back during the offseason. For instance, NFL players Russell Wilson and Bryan Walters recently visited the Rady Children's Hospital  in San Diego together.

Elsewhere, prospects for the Philadelphia Flyers participated in the "Trial on the Isle," a day of beach training activities that also helps raise money for military charities. Later that same day, they helped run a hockey clinic for elementary school kids, according to Adam Kimelman of NHL.com.

Take Epic Family Vacations

4 of 15

When you're an NBA superstar like Chris Bosh, a family vacation means more than a 12-hour road trip to visit grandparents or cousins.

Instead, Bosh and his family set out on the #BoshFamilyWorldTour, chronicling the experience on Instagram. Bosh posted shots at the Berlin Wall, Stonehenge, the Eiffel Tower and Machu Picchu before I got too depressed to keep clicking through.

Play Celebrity Softball

5 of 15

There's nothing like kicking back for a lazy summer softball game to enjoy the offseason. Of course, they don't let just anyone play in a "celebrity" game.

In June, a lot of NFL superstars were on hand for Joe Haden's celebrity softball game in Ohio. We're talking Colin Kaepernick, Torrey Smith, Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor and even the legendary Deion Sanders.

Toss out First Pitches

6 of 15

Richard Sherman has spent his time since the Seattle Seahawks' loss in Super Bowl XLIX vacationing in Maui and, you know, becoming a father.

He also found time to throw out the first pitch at a Seattle Mariners game, something they don't let just anyone do. According to Seahawks.com, Sherman said, "Felix [Hernandez] told me, pretty much, just throw it as hard as you can." Turns out that Hernandez knows what he’s talking about.

Appear on Game Shows

7 of 15

Family Feud started running a series of celebrity episodes on June 21. To the shock of no one, one episode included the Gronkowski family.

Another featured 10 NFL players in an AFC vs. NFC battle. Denver Broncos linebacker DeMarcus Ware posted a photo to Instagram with his AFC teammates—Terrell Suggs, Antonio Gates, Antonio Brown and Nick Mangold. The NFC team consisted of Eddie Lacy, Calais Campbell, Thomas Davis, Vernon Davis and Matt Forte.

Oh, and shoutout to Aaron Rodgers for winning Celebrity Jeopardy in his free time.

Meet Jennifer Aniston

8 of 15

J.J. Watt is a pretty big celebrity, but most would probably agree he's not as big of a celebrity as Jennifer Aniston. The Pro Bowl defensive end has called the actress his "lifetime crush," and he finally got to meet her.

According to Watt's Instagram caption, playing it cool wasn't even in the cards.

Start Dating a Kardashian (Possibly)

9 of 15

The Kardashian sisters have certainly had their share of athlete boyfriends. This next one is speculation so far, but there is at least some evidence that James Harden and Khloe Kardashian are dating.

The two were spotted in Las Vegas together, and according to Shyam Dodge of DailyMail.com, they also enjoyed a cozy dinner for two in Calabasas, California, not long ago.

Have a "Summer of George"

10 of 15

Rob Gronkowski probably declared this offseason a "Summer of Gronk" at some point. And even if he didn't, he sure is having one—taking a page from George Constaza's book and having a summer all about himself.

The following is a partial list of all the shenanigans the New England Patriots tight end has gotten into since winning Super Bowl XLIX in February: raged on his own party bus, spiked everything in sight, made a music video with David Ortiz, guest-starred on an episode of Top Chef and done a whole lot of dancing

Attend Fashion Week

11 of 15

Dwyane Wade is one of the most fashion-conscious athletes in the NBA. So it comes as no surprise that his offseason activities include attending New York Men's Fashion Week with his wife, actress Gabrielle Union.

And of course they sat front row—it's what superstars do.

Go to Movie Premieres

12 of 15

A lot of athletes make Hollywood cameos, but LeBron James has a pretty substantial role in Judd Apatow's new comedy, Trainwreck.

So not only did James get fancied up to attend the New York premiere—he is actually in the film. In case you hadn't heard, he's kind of a big deal.

Hang out with Celebrity Girlfriend

13 of 15

Some superstar athletes even have superstar girlfriends. Russell Wilson took Ciara to the White House Correspondents' Dinner in April. Actress Olivia Munn and Aaron Rodgers got decked out for the Met Gala in May. And even though he's retired, legendary New York Yankee Derek Jeter brought the Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover model to the ESPYs.

Hang out with Other Superstars

14 of 15

According to TMZ, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade recently vacationed together in the Bahamas on a $29 million yacht. At one point, a photo surfaced of the two, along with Wade's wife Gabrielle Union and Chris Paul, riding a banana boat.

And later, Carmelo Anthony appeared to join them, as evidenced by Wade's Instagram account.

Wakeboard with the Stanley Cup

15 of 15

The Stanley Cup always has an epic summer. That's because members of the championship team each get a chance to take it with them wherever they want.

Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews spent his first day with the Cup at a children's hospital in Winnipeg. Then he took it wakeboarding. Only a total boss goes wakeboarding with the Stanley Cup.
