Brian Robinson Jr. Trade Reportedly Being Discussed by Commanders Ahead of NFL Season

Zach BacharAug 17, 2025

The Washington Commanders have been exploring trades involving running back Brian Robinson Jr. heading into the 2025 season, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

Robinson is set to enter the final year of his rookie contract with Washington, as he'll carry a $3.6 million cap hit for his 2025 campaign before hitting free agency in 2026 (via Spotrac).

The Commanders like their depth at running back but could move the 26-year-old "for the right price," per Schultz.

Washington selected Robinson with a third-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft and he quickly developed into a starter as a rookie.

He went on to put together a strong 2023 campaign, amassing 1,101 all-purpose yards while finding the end zone nine times in 15 games.

Robinson wasn't able to build upon that season in 2024, recording 958 yards from scrimmage to go along with eight scores. His average of 4.6 yards per touch also represented a step down from his average of 5.1 yards per touch the prior year.

With veteran Austin Ekeler in the mix for Washington's running back rotation and seventh-round rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt earning rave reviews for his performance in training camp, Commanders general manager Adam Peters could pull the trigger on a Robinson trade if he receives an enticing offer.

Still, the incumbent starter earned praise from offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury on Friday.

"He's a guy that when you put the pads on and you really practice full speed is when he really shows up," Kingsbury said regarding Robinson, per NBC Sports' JP Finlay. "I thought he had his best practice against New England when we did the competition versus them before the game."

If the Commanders are serious about moving Robinson, they'll likely attempt to do so before teams are required to trim their rosters down to 53 players on Aug. 27.
