Dominant doesn't begin to describe a showing in which Chimaev was in control from the opening bell. He landed 12 takedowns to one for Du Plessis and had a 37-13 edge in signature strikes.
The three judges were united in scoring the bout 50-44.
Du Plessis said in his post-fight interview that Chimaev was "just like a blanket" in terms of how much he was a suffocating presence.
"It wasn't a matter of strength. It wasn't that physical, it was almost as if he knew what your next move is going to be," the former middleweight champion said. "He got it without using too much power and I had to decide, am I going to be on my back or have him on my back? At the end I went for it, had the back. I could almost taste that victory but big ups to Khamzat."
The fight was so one-sided that some were either bored or disappointed by the lack of drama. The United Center crowd gave Chimaev a frosty reception and let out some boos after the final scoring was announced.
It's impossible to argue with the results, though. Chimaev had a clear strategy in mind and utilized it to great effect inside the cage on Saturday night.
