Joe Milton to Start for Cowboys vs. Ravens in NFL Preseason Week 2

Scott PolacekAug 14, 2025

It will be the Joe Milton show once again when the Dallas Cowboys take the field for Saturday's preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer told reporters Thursday the plan is to start Milton after he previously started the team's preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams.

Dallas acquired Milton from the New England Patriots via trade this offseason to add depth behind Dak Prescott, and a second straight preseason start indicates he is in line to be the primary backup if he can remain healthy.

Will Grier saw limited action against the Rams, although he did run for a touchdown in his one series during the fourth quarter.

Milton went 17-of-29 passing for 143 yards, one touchdown and one interception against Los Angeles and will look to build on that performance when he takes on the Ravens. If he does, he could cement his position behind Prescott.

That is an important position, as injuries limited Prescott to eight games last season after he played five games in 2020 and 12 games in 2022. Keeping Prescott healthy is the Cowboys' surest way to contention in the NFC East, but they at least have someone who flashed his potential in limited playing time last season.

Milton entered the league as a sixth-round pick in 2024 but didn't see action in a regular-season game until the season finale against the Buffalo Bills. All he did was lead the Patriots to a 23-16 victory by completing 22-of-29 passes for 241 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions.

He also scored a rushing touchdown.

It should be noted the Bills had already clinched a playoff spot and didn't play many of their regulars, but Milton still impressed when given an opportunity.

And he will have another opportunity Saturday against the Ravens.
