Matt Breida Reportedly Retiring After 7 NFL Seasons with 49ers, Bills, Giants, More

Veteran running back Matt Breida is officially hanging up his cleats.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Breida is planning to retire from the NFL after seven seasons. The 30-year-old suited up for the San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills and New York Giants during his career.

Fowler added that the Dolphins recently requested to host Breida for a workout, but he declined.

Breida most recently spent training camp with the 49ers last summer, but he sat out the 2024 season after they released him before it started. He most recently played with the Giants, appearing in all 17 games in both the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

An undrafted free agent in 2017, Breida quickly carved out a niche for himself when he started his career in San Francisco. His best year was his sophomore season in the NFL, as he started 13 games for the 49ers and finished with 814 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 153 carries while also adding 27 receptions for 261 yards and two more scores.

Breida finishes his career with 2,652 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns on 575 carries in 98 games, plus 120 receptions for 935 yards and six touchdowns.

While the Dolphins may have thought that Breida had something left in the tank, it seems that he's content to move on from the NFL and begin the next chapter of his life in retirement.
