Patriots' Stefon Diggs Says 'I'm Back' from Knee Injury, Unsure if He'll Play Week 1
New England Patriots star receiver Stefon Diggs is confident in his recovery from the torn ACL that limited him to eight games in 2024, but he's not getting too ahead of himself.
During an appearance on Scoop City, Diggs told The Athletic's Dianna Russini that he's still unsure about whether he will be active for the Patriots' 2025 season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders.
"I feel great. I'm pushing the needle, always. ... We'll see about Week 1, I don't know how I feel about it, we'll see," Diggs said at the 4:00 mark. "Coaches aren't too excited, I'm not too excited, I'm just trying to take it day by day. So we'll see, it looks like we just don't know where it's gonna go."
Diggs spent the 2024 season with the Houston Texans after being traded from the Buffalo Bills. In his eight appearances before his injury, he recorded 47 catches for 496 yards and three touchdowns along with his first career rushing touchdown. After becoming a free agent this offseason, he landed with the Patriots on a three-year, $63.5 million deal.
When asked about his goals for his first year in New England (9:00 mark), Diggs had a simple answer.
"Back to where I was, as far as being the best player I can be. I'm back healthy, I just want to be healthy," he said. "When I'm healthy, I'm a halfway decent player. So just trying to stay healthy and put my best foot forward. We'll see how the rest goes."
It already looks like Diggs is well on his way, as he had a strong performance during a joint training camp practice with the Minnesota Vikings, the franchise with which he began his career.
Despite his confidence in his progress, Diggs maintained that his status for Week 1 isn't up to him, and the decision on whether he will play belongs to Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel.
"I got a scoop for you: I'm back. There it is. I'm back strapping them up," Diggs said confidently. But when asked if that means he'll be on the field for the season opener, he remained coy, saying, "I don't know, you gotta take that up with Coach [Vrabel]."
