Bears' Ben Johnson Meets with Caleb Williams, Expects to 'Be In A Good Spot' Week 1

Paul KasabianAug 13, 2025

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson met with quarterback Caleb Williams on Tuesday, and he seemed pleased with that conversation, per comments to reporters on Wednesday.

Williams encounters a unique challenge this year. Not only does he have to continue his own development entering his second NFL season, but the ex-USC star also has to learn an entirely new system after ex-head coach Matt Nagy was fired in November and Johnson, the former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator, was brought in as head coach a couple months later.

Williams already had a ton on his shoulders last year after being given the keys to the offense. There's also a lot of pressure on him as a former No. 1 overall pick, and also as the leader of a blue-chip NFL franchise that is looking for its first Super Bowl in 40 years.

He's in good hands with Johnson, who just oversaw the NFL's No. 1 scoring offense. In the year before Johnson's arrival, Detroit had the No. 25 scoring offense. Johnson then led the Lions to No. 5 finishes in 2022 and 2023 before leading the way in 2024.

Now he's hoping to jumpstart the Bears' offense. Johnson certainly has the talent to do so, starting with Williams. But Williams also has a host of pass-catching talents, including wideouts D.J. Moore and Rome Odunze as well as tight ends Colston Loveland and Cole Kmet.

Johnson seems pleased with where Williams is at right now. He still has a little time to learn and get more acclimated with the offense, though, with the Bears beginning the season on Monday, Sept. 8 versus the Minnesota Vikings.
