Bryson DeChambeau Details Gaining 35 Pounds at Start of PGA Tour Career in Video

Paul KasabianAug 12, 2025

Bryson DeChambeau appeared on the Pat McAfee Show Tuesday and discussed a host of topics, including a large weight gain to start his career.

"I went from 204-5 pounds to at my peak, I was 240. Huge. Yeah, it was brutal. I couldn't breathe. The knees a little bit, but it was more of, like, my breathing. I couldn't breathe...I always felt winded. I couldn't last a long time. So that was the problem for me. And then I went back to 220, I'm like at 220-225 now, and then I went from, let's see, 111 mph swing speed to like, so 20 miles an hour in swing speed, which equates to 298 yards of carry, to now I'm carrying at 327-328. It's like 30 yards."

DeChambeau went professional in 2016 after the Masters, where he finished as the low amateur and ended tied for 21st. He endured a bit of a rough start in 2016, including a stretch of four straight missed cuts. In 2017, DeChambeau missed eight straight cuts from the RBC Heritage in April through the U.S. Open in June.

However, DeChambeau found his groove from there, making 8-of-10 cuts and even winning his first-ever tournament, the John Deere Classic.

DeChambeau then won four tournaments in 2018, and he's since become a two-time U.S. Open champion (2020, 2024). DeChambeau joined LIV Golf League in June 2022 and has won three events there as well.

So he's found a great deal of success since a rocky two-year start as a pro. It's clear the weight loss helped him greatly, both in terms of his breathing but also his swing speed, allowing him to be one of the game's elite bombers on a yearly basis.
