Stefanski Not Ready to Name Shedeur Sanders QB1 for Browns' Week 2 Preseason Game

Joseph ZuckerAug 11, 2025

Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski was noncommittal when asked whether Shedeur Sanders will be the starting quarterback for Saturday's preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Stefanski told reporters he's "not there yet" on naming a starter and will "have a better feel" by Wednesday or Thursday.

Sanders got the majority of reps under center in Cleveland's 30-10 win over the Carolina Panthers, and he finished 14-of-23 for 138 yards and two touchdowns. All in all, it was a solid performance from the rookie.

However, there were some moments that likely gave Stefanski and his assistants pause.

Bleacher Report NFL scout Dame Parson wrote before the draft that Sanders can occasionally wait too long to throw and drift out of the pocket. The fifth-round draft pick learned the hard way that trying to extend plays often ends badly.

That's an adjustment every quarterback has to make coming out of college, so Sanders is far from unique in that regard.

As much as a lot of fans are ready to see the former Colorado star move up the depth chart, Stefanski has maintained he wants to fully evaluate all of his options.

"We need to get through the next couple of days from an injury standpoint and see where everybody is," he told reporters Saturday. "I'm really focused on all of our quarterbacks' development and every single one of these reps last night, how important they are. So that's what I'm focused on more than anything."

Some have argued the Browns aren't giving Sanders a fair shake in practice, and that broad narrative is only going to persist if his playing time is lessened against Philadelphia.

But Stefanski will also want to see what Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel do in a preseason setting after they were sidelined for the Panthers game. If they're healthy, then they're bound to eat into Sanders' snap count for now.

This week should provide a lot more insight into the structure of the quarterback room heading into the regular season.
