Justin Rose Beats Spaun in Playoff at FedEx St. Jude Championship, Thrills Golf Fans

PGA fans were treated to some bonus golf at the St. Jude Championship on Sunday.

A playoff was necessary to determine the winner of the first round of the FedEx Cup Playoffs after J.J. Spaun and Justin Rose each finished minus-16 after their four rounds. Rose had an opportunity to secure the victory on the 18th hole but his putt just missed the mark.

It took three playoff holes but eventually a clutch birdie allowed Rose to claim the victory anyway.

This was the third time the St. Jude Championship had reached a playoff in the past four years. Both Spaun and Rose had also fell short in a playoff earlier in the season, with Spaun losing at The Players Championship and Rose losing at the Masters. Both lost to Rory McIlroy in those playoff's

Both players shot identical 65's on the day and shot up the leaderboard.

Fans took to social media to praise Rose's performance.

Scottie Scheffler and Tommy Fleetwood finished tied for third at minus-15 while Cameron Young rounded out the top five at minus-11. Young shot a 64, which was the best score of any golfer on Sunday.

Scottie Scheffler remains atop the FedEx Cup Standings with and Spaun's performance keeps him in second. Rose's win saw him rise 21 spots up the standings to fourth place.

Some notable players who missed the cut-off for next week's BMW Championship include Jordan Spieth, Wyndham Clark and Tony Finau.
