Matthew Stafford to Return to Practice Monday amid Back Injury, Rams' Sean McVay Says

Julia StumbaughAug 9, 2025

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is set to rejoin practice on Monday after more than two weeks sidelined by a back injury, head coach Sean McVay confirmed on Saturday.

McVay said that Stafford had "no limitations in terms of the types of throws" he was able to complete during a Saturday workout.

"He felt really good, and so we're looking forward to progressing him back into practice on Monday, but it was a good step in the right direction," McVay said (h/t Ira Gorawara of the Los Angeles Times).

McVay first spoke about Stafford's back injury when training camp opened on July 22. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Wednesday that Stafford had suffered an aggravated disc and received an epidural as part of his treatment.

McVay later confirmed both the news regarding both the aggravated disc and the epidural.

Rapoport also reported that the Rams are planning for Stafford to be available when the start of the regular season.

McVay said Saturday that he didn't know if Stafford was still dealing with pain or discomfort relating to the injury.

The Rams head coach had previously told reporters on Thursday that the plan was to decide whether Stafford would return to practice based on how he handled his Saturday workout.

The team confirmed his upcoming availability after watching him throw more than 60 passes, according to McVay.

The Rams were originally scheduled to hold a joint practice with the Los Angeles Chargers on Wednesday in El Segundo.

McVay, who originally said on Thursday that Stafford would be held out of the practice, said Saturday the joint practice had been canceled altogether due to injuries.

Recent injury scares in Los Angeles include edge rusher Jared Verse, who said he was fine after leav practiceing on Thursday in order to get his knee looked at, and defensive tackle Kobie Turner, who is currently "week-to-week" with a back injury.

The team recently received even worse injury news regarding left tackle Rashawn Slater, who will miss the entire 2025 season after suffering a torn patellar tendon on Thursday.

McVay and his staff will hope for a more positive update regarding their star quarterback before the Rams open the regular season on Sept. 7 against the Houston Texans.
