Can Indiana Play Spoiler to North Carolina's Repeat Hopes?

Pitt County Girls Softball from Winterville, North Carolina enter Saturday's semifinals as the defending LLSWS champions, looking to make it two years in a row as the best team in their sport. They have shown grit and determination throughout this tournament, grinding out wins when, a year ago, they simply battered opponents with runs and put games out of reach early.

One of those hard-fought victories this year was an opening round match-up with their semifinal opponents from Floyds Knobs, Indiana, representing the Central Region.

Emily Mills, Ava Wilson, Avery Cash, and Gemma Braxton all came up big, delivering RBIs in crucial moments before allowing their star pitcher, McKayla Montgomery, to put the game away.

The Indiana squad gave up five runs in that game but have been on a mission since, shutting out opponents in three consecutive games to get to the Orange Bracket title game and a rematch with the champions.

Floyds Knobs were up 3-0 in that first game before allowing the opponents to come back. Strong pitching and great defense since then have allowed them to jump on opponents and smother their offenses.

If they can execute that game plan while containing the North Carolina offense, the Central Region squad can not only win their bracket and ruin their opponent's shot at history, but also legitimately compete for the LLSWS championship.

Whether that is easier said than done is the question.
