Raiders' Carroll Says Ashton Jeanty, Starting Offense to Play 'Quite a Bit' vs. 49ers

Zach BacharAug 8, 2025

Las Vegas Raiders head coach Pete Carroll confirmed that running back Ashton Jeanty and the rest of the team's first-string offense will receive more playing time in the team's second preseason matchup with the San Francisco 49ers.

Carroll told reporters Friday that the starters will see the field "quite a bit" against the 49ers, but won't run too many complex plays (h/t Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk).

"We’re real, real basic," Carroll said. "We ran the most fundamental plays that you can run. Our format of going through the preseason is going to continue to be pretty basic just to keep our edge for the opener and the first three or four games. Teams don’t know who we are and so they’re gonna have to find out as we go."

The majority of Las Vegas' first-team offense only played one series during its 23-23 tie with the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night.

Jeanty, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, had a quiet preseason debut for the Raiders. He lost one yard on three carries.

Carroll noted that Las Vegas didn't give Jeanty "a chance" to properly showcase his skills, via Alper.

The 21-year-old is coming off a dominant junior year at Boise State, leading the country with 2,601 rush yards on 374 attempts in 14 games. Jeanty also found the end zone 30 times.

He isn't the only new face in Las Vegas' offense, with Geno Smith looking to build more chemistry with his teammates after the quarterback was acquired in a March trade with the Seahawks.

After scoring just three points in the first half against Seattle on Thursday, Carroll wants his starting offense on the field more in the Raiders' second preseason contest.
