Saints List Tyler Shough, Rattler, Haener as Co-QB1s on 1st Unofficial Depth Chart

Paul KasabianAug 5, 2025

The New Orleans Saints have a three-man quarterback battle in training camp with Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener all taking part.

It's unclear who will be the starting quarterback when the season begins on Sept. 7, and the first unofficial depth chart didn't provide any clarity, with the three players collectively being listed as QB1s right now.

Of course, there's still time for new head coach Kellen Moore to figure that out with the team's Week 1 home game against the Arizona Cardinals still more than a month away (Sept. 7).

In the meantime, there's still a big question mark at QB. Nick Underhill of New Orleans.Football offered an astute comment on the matter as it stands.

The Saints are looking for a new starter after Derek Carr retired. They added a new rookie in Shough, a second-rounder.

Rattler was the team's starter for six games last year after Carr was sidelined due to numerous injuries. He didn't have a great season, with the team going 0-6 with him at the helm. The former South Carolina star completed 57.0 percent of his throws for four touchdowns (five interceptions) and 1,317 yards (5.8 yards per attempt).

That being said, the 2024 season was a brutal one for the Saints, who suffered a host of injuries, including season-ending ones to their top two wideouts (Chris Olave, Rasheed Shaheed). New Orleans also dealt with midseason strife after head coach Dennis Allen was fired following a 2-7 start (seven straight losses).

So Rattler had a lot on his plate, especially as a rookie (the Saints also probably couldn't have imagined him starting in his rookie year when they selected him in Round 5 last year). Now he gets a fresh start under Moore and a new chance to impress the franchise.

As for Haener, the fourth-round pick in 2023 hasn't seen much playing time, completing 18-of-39 passes for one touchdown, one interception and 226 yards in 2024. He started a Dec. 15 game against the Washington Commanders but was benched at halftime for Rattler, who started the rest of the year.

Shough was a notable riser in the pre-draft process and ended up being the third QB taken off the board behind Cam Ward and Jaxson Dart. It wouldn't be a surprise if he ends up getting the call here, in part because the Saints clearly regard him highly based on their use of a second-rounder to select him.

Shough played at Oregon, Texas Tech and Louisville during his collegiate career. He played for Louisville in his last season (2024), completing 62.7 percent of his passes for 3,195 yards, 23 touchdowns and six interceptions.

The trio will assuredly see action during the three-game preseason. The Saints' first game will be at the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. ET.
