Dillon Gabriel Has Hamstring Injury Amid Browns QB Battle vs. Shedeur, Flacco, Pickett

Zach BacharAug 4, 2025

Cleveland Browns rookie Dillon Gabriel was limited in Monday's practice with a sore hamstring, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.

Gabriel, a third-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft, initially experienced tightness in his hamstring during practice on Saturday (via Cabot).

The 24-year-old is in the midst of Cleveland's quarterback battle with Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and fellow first-year passer Shedeur Sanders.

Pickett missed three consecutive practices after suffering a hamstring injury of his own on July 26. He eventually returned on Friday, but has been held out of team drills ever since.

Sanders also didn't participate in Saturday's team drills due to a sore shoulder. He returned to practice in full on Monday, though (via Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal).

As for Gabriel, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski didn't seem too worried that his hamstring injury would be a long-term issue.

"He'll be out here, just a little bit of tightness," Stefanski said Monday, per Kelsey Russo of the team's official website.

Gabriel is looking to establish himself as Cleveland's long-term option under center and potentially earn some extended playing time as a rookie.

He's coming off an impressive senior season at Oregon in 2024, finishing No. 3 in Heisman Trophy voting. Gabriel completed 72.9 percent of his throws for 3,857 yards and 30 touchdowns compared to just six interceptions in 14 games.

He hasn't seemed to stand out in Cleveland's training camp, though. Zac Jackson of The Athletic reported Sunday that Gabriel "has done nothing to make anyone observing believe he’s ready to be trusted as a No. 2 quarterback."

As the signal-caller attempts to rise up the Browns' depth chart in the preseason, he was hampered by a hamstring issue in practice on Monday.
