Noah Lyles Shoved by Kenny Bednarek on Video After Staredown in 200m Race Win

Timothy RappAug 3, 2025

United States sprinter Noah Lyles stared down Kenny Bednarak and appeared to slightly veer into his path after narrowly defeating him in the 200m final at Sunday's USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships.

Bednarek didn't take kindly to either, giving Lyles a light shove before the two men exchanged words and eventually a tense handshake.

Bednarak told Lyles in the post-race interview that he expected a call from him following the kerfuffle.

“I’m not going to say it out here, but we've got something to do and talk about," he added.

Lyles registered a time of 19.63 seconds in the victory, the best time in the world this year. It was his fifth U.S. title in the men's 200m, tying Michael Johnson and Ralph Metcalfe for the most in American history. He hasn't lost a U.S. 200m final since 2016 at the Olympic Trials.

In the 200m, Lyles holds a 13-2 advantage over Bednarak, though the latter has shown up when it mattered most, besting Lyles at the past two Olympics. In both cases, Bednarak took home silver while Lyles earned bronze.

Perhaps that contributed to Lyles staring down Bednarak after Sunday's win.

"Noah's gonna be Noah," Bednarak said after the race. "He wants to stare me down, that's fine, but I ran five rounds. He's fresh. He can line up again when we're both fresh and see what happens. I'm very confident I can beat him. That's all I can say. Little personal stuff and we'll figure it out."

Lyles, who has dealt with an ankle injury this season, didn't participate in the 100m final on Friday, won by Bednarak.

"It was a pretty difficult championship," Lyles said. "I've been tired. It's been rough. coming out here when you're not 100 percent and being able to say, 'I still got to give my all no matter what happens.' That's tough. That's tough."

He still had plenty of energy to let Bednarak hear about it.
