Terry McLaurin Reportedly Requests Commanders Trade Amid Contract Rumors
Contract negotiations between Terry McLaurin and the Washington Commanders are clearly not progressing in a meaningful manner.
According to multiple reports, the star wideout—who has been holding in during training camp this summer—has requested a trade:

Both Schefter and The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported that Washington has no intention of moving on from McLaurin, with the latter noting that, "Over the last few months, multiple teams have reached out to the Commanders to inquire about trading for McLaurin. Each time, they were told no."
McLaurin, who is entering the final year of his contract, is seeking a long-term extension. While he reported to training camp on Sunday, he hasn't been practicing with the team, technically starting the year on the PUP list.
"McLaurin has reported and we're very happy about that," head coach Dan Quinn told reporters at the time. "He'll start training camp on PUP for his ankle. On the business side, [Commanders general manager Adam Peters] and the guys are still working very hard with Terry and his rep on the business side of things. While on PUP—just like we do with the other guys—he'll be working with the trainers to get back as soon as he can."
Clearly, contract talks haven't been going well, at least from McLaurin's perspective. But there's also a nearly zero percent chance that Washington, with Super Bowl aspirations in 2025, would seriously consider trading him.
The two-time Pro Bowler is Jayden Daniels' most important target, registering his fifth straight 1,000-yard season in 2024 (82 catches for 1,096 yards and a career-best 13 touchdowns). And he's watched as receivers like D.K. Metcalf (four years, $132 million), Garrett Wilson (four years, $130 million) and Tee Higgins (four years, $115 million) have received extensions this offseason. While all three are younger, McLaurin's consistent production should put him in that contractual range.
Eventually, he'll likely sign a deal at an average annual value somewhere in that ballpark, though the exact figure and years seems to be a sticking point for the two sides. Despite Thursday's trade request, it seems more likely this situation will eventually thaw out and result in an extension for the veteran wideout.
