Top SummerSlam Matches to Watch
John Cena vs. Cody Rhodes
In the likely main event of Night 1 of SummerSlam, Rhodes will look to exact revenge against Cena for what happened in the main event of WrestleMania 41.
After Cena shocked the wrestling world by turning heel on Rhodes at Elimination Chamber, Cena beat Rhodes for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania with some help from rapper Travis Scott.
Cody went back to the drawing board coming out of WrestleMania and won the King of the Ring tournament in order to earn a rematch against Cena.
Given that their SummerSlam match is a street fight, it opens the door for interference, but it is anyone's guess who might get involved.
One intriguing possibility is The Rock, who orchestrated Cena's heel turn at Elimination Chamber, but wasn't part of the build to WrestleMania and didn't show up at WrestleMania either.
The Rock could possibly surprise the WWE Universe by resurfacing and lending Cena a helping hand, or by truly turning things upside down and aligning with Rhodes.
A double turn feels possible given that Cena is entering the final months of his retirement tour, and if it happens at SummerSlam, it may very well be one of the biggest moments in WWE history.
Naomi vs. Iyo Sky vs. Rhea Ripley
After Naomi crashed the Women's World Championship match between Iyo Sky and Rhea Ripley at Evolution, both Sky and Ripley will get their chance at revenge at SummerSlam.
Sky and Ripley put on what was arguably one of the best women's matches in WWE history in the main event of Evolution, but they didn't get to have a proper conclusion, as Naomi ran down and cashed in her Money in the Bank contract to win the title.
SummerSlam will represent Naomi's first title defense, and it will come against two of the top women's wrestlers in the world.
Sky and Ripley are both former multi-time women's champions who have great in-ring chemistry together, but it remains to be seen how they will work with Naomi.
Naomi is doing some of the best work of her career right now both in terms of her character and in the ring, which suggests she could add to the equation and make the match just as good or better than Iyo vs. Rhea from Evolution.
It is difficult to envision Naomi losing in her first defense, but even if she does come out on top, the Triple Threat has a chance to be a truly special match.
Gunther vs. CM Punk
At SummerSlam, Gunther will face perhaps the toughest test of his two reigns as world heavyweight champion when he takes on CM Punk in the potential main event of Night 1.
Punk won a gauntlet match to become No. 1 contender a couple of weeks ago, and he and Gunther have quickly entered into a heated rivalry since then.
Gunther took issue with Punk referring to himself as the "best in the world," and announced his intention to prove that he is the better wrestler.
Over the course of his time in WWE, it can be argued that no Superstar has been more dominant than Gunther, making him the perfect foil for Punk.
Punk has been denied in multiple attempts to become world champion since his return to WWE in November 2023, and in order to reach the top of the mountain once again, he will have to defeat someone who is nearly unbeatable.
With Gunther as the hulking heel, Punk will play the role of the plucky babyface, and that could make for a match that stands out as the best bout over both nights of SummerSlam.
