Cowboys' Rob Jones Reportedly Out 2-3 Months After Breaking Bone in Neck in Practice

Adam WellsJul 28, 2025

The offensive line depth for the Dallas Cowboys has taken a hit with Rob Jones set to miss multiple months due to a broken bone in his neck.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter and Todd Archer, Jones is expected to miss two to three months after suffering the injury during Sunday's practice.

After spending the first four years of his career with the Miami Dolphins, Jones signed a one-year deal with the Cowboys as a free agent in March. He was brought in to provide depth at guard in the wake of Zack Martin's retirement.

Tyler Booker, the Cowboys' first-round draft pick in April, was added with the goal of being able to step in as an immediate starter. However, his acclimation period to the NFL opened a door for Jones to potentially enter the regular season with the starting unit.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer told reporters on Sunday that Jones had been playing with the starting offensive line due to his strong play early in camp, but the coaching staff would continue to get Booker reps with that group.

Jones' injury will likely push Booker back into a more prominent role leading into the Cowboys' first preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams on Aug. 9.

Depending on which end of the recovery timeline Jones falls, he could be back on the field as soon as late September. If it takes the full three months for him to heal, his return would happen in late October.

Jones entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Dolphins in 2021. He appeared in eight games as a rookie, then worked his way into the starting lineup for seven games during the 2022 season.

A knee injury limited Jones to just eight games in 2023, but he rebounded with the best season of his career last year. The 26-year-old started all 17 games at left guard for the Dolphins.
