Jauan Jennings Exits 49ers Practice With Calf Injury Amid Contract, NFL Trade Rumors

Andrew PetersJul 27, 2025

Amid contract talks with the San Francisco 49ers, wide receiver Jauan Jennings had a wrench thrown in his plans of proving his worth during training camp.

Per Pro Football Talk's Josh Alper, Jennings suffered a calf injury during practice on Sunday. It's unclear how serious the injury is.

“I don’t know,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said. “I’ll hear about it later today with anybody who goes out of practice, but that’s why I know he went out. That’s what he had in OTAs, so I’m sure it’s similar.”

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported earlier this month that Jennings wanted a new contract or a trade. The 28-year-old is entering the final season of a two-year deal worth up to $15.4 million and will make $7.5 million in 2025.

According to Schefter, Jennings previously approached San Francisco about a new deal, but the two sides made "little progress." The 49ers feel they have treated Jennings "fairly."

Schefter reported that Jennings was not expected to be a training camp holdout, and that has remained true, though he noted that Jennings was "not expected to be happy."

Jennings, a former seventh-round pick out of Tennessee, is coming off the best season of his career. With receiver Brandon Aiyuk missing most of the season with a torn ACL and MCL, Jennings stepped up and recorded 975 receiving yards and six touchdowns, both of which were career highs.

Jennings might not see that kind of production if the 49ers have a healthy receiving core this year, but he proved last season that he's more than capable of being a solid second or third option.

Should the 49ers decide not to give him a contract, they likely won't have much trouble finding a trade partner.

First, Jennings will look to avoid a major injury.
