Christian Wilkins' Commitment Reportedly Questioned by Raiders Insiders Amid Injury

Adam WellsJul 26, 2025

A dispute between Christian Wilkins and the Las Vegas Raiders about whether or not he should undergo a second surgery caused a rift between himself and several members of the organization.

Per The Athletic's Tashan Reed, Wilkins declined on multiple occasions to undergo have a second procedure on his foot after the Raiders determined prior to the start of OTAs that would be the best path to take for his injury to heal correctly.

"Wilkins’ refusal to undergo a second surgery garnered an adverse reaction from some players, coaches and executives, according to league sources, and raised questions about his commitment. That didn’t jive with what the front office has said they want the Raiders to be about," wrote Reed.

The Raiders stunned many on Thursday when they announced Wilkins had been released with the terminated vested veteran designation.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Wilkins filed a grievance with the NFLPA after the Raiders voided the $35.2 million in remaining guaranteed money on his contract based on "how he treated the rehab from his foot injury" that ended his 2024 season in Week 5.

Coming off a career year with the Miami Dolphins in 2023, Wilkins cashed in with a four-year, $110 million deal as a free agent in March 2024. The deal made him the second-highest-paid interior defensive lineman in the NFL after Chris Jones.

The regime that gave Wilkins his contract were not brought back after the Raiders finished 4-13 last season. General manager Tom Telesco and head coach Antonio Pierce were replaced by John Spytek and Pete Carroll.

Spytek and Carroll have talked about wanting to change the culture around the franchise to get the Raiders back to a playoff contender after posting just two winning seasons in the past 22 years.

Wilkins was expected to be a key player for the organization, but his injury and dispute with the club about how to treat led them to reach the conclusion it was simpler to just walk away.
