Patrick Mahomes Says Chiefs 'Have to Get Better' After Super Bowl Loss to Eagles

Zach BacharJul 24, 2025

Patrick Mahomes is focused on improvement after the Kansas City Chiefs' 2024 season ended with a 40-22 defeat at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX.

"You always have to get better," Mahomes said, per ESPN's Nate Taylor. "That's something that people lose track of when you have success. We didn't win that last game, but we had a lot of success last year. I think sometimes people want to be stagnant. They want to go out there and do it over again. We have to get better."

Mahomes and the Chiefs have put together one of the NFL's modern dynasties, making Super Bowl appearances in five of the past six years and hoisting the Lombardi Trophy three times over that span.

Kansas City earned titles in 2022 and 2023, nearly becoming the first team in NFL history to win the Super Bowl three consecutive times before falling to the Eagles last season.

The star quarterback revealed that the lopsided defeat against Philadelphia gave him added motivation in offseason workouts.

"It kind of helps you out on some of those extra workouts that you don't want to do," Mahomes said, via Taylor. "It keeps that in your mind."

The two-time MVP's individual production in 2024 represented a step down compared to past seasons, as his 245.5 pass yards per game and 6.8 yards per attempt both represented career-low marks.

Mahomes also completed 67.5 percent of his throws and tossed 26 touchdowns compared to 11 interceptions.

Kansas City is poised to remain one of the top AFC contenders despite the Super Bowl defeat, boasting an offense featuring Mahomes and Travis Kelce as well as a defense headlined by stars such as defensive tackle Chris Jones and cornerback Trent McDuffie.

While the Chiefs finished with a 15-1 regular-season record in 2024 and emerged from the AFC in the playoffs, Mahomes wants the team to get even better in 2025.
