Charlotte, Alexa Beat Raquel, Roxanne to Win WWE Women's Tag Titles at SummerSlam
Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss beat Raquel Rodriguez and Roxanne Perez on Night 1 of SummerSlam on Saturday to win the WWE Women's Tag Team Championships.
Flair had a big moment in this match, landing a moonsault on both of her opponents.
Flair tried to get the pin on Rodriguez, but she was unsuccessful. However, she was victorious soon afterward, in part because she knocked out Rodriguez with a big boot, allowing Bliss to hit Perez with Sister Abigail to take the titles.
Raquel and Liv Morgan won back the women's tag titles from Becky Lynch and Lyra Valkyria on the Raw after WrestleMania, but it wasn't long before Morgan landed on the shelf with an injury, necessitating a replacement.
Perez, who had been trying to ingratiate herself to The Judgment Day for weeks, volunteered to step in for Liv. And while Rodriguez was apprehensive at first, she ultimately agreed after Roxanne helped her win a match.
Raw general manager Adam Pearce and SmackDown GM Nick Aldis allowed Perez to step in, but under the condition that she and Raquel would have to defend the titles against three teams at Evolution.
Rodriguez and Perez put the belts on the line against Flair and Bliss, The Kabuki Warriors, and Zaria and Sol Ruca at Evolution, and they won the Fatal 4-Way to retain.
Although they came out on the losing end, Flair and Bliss were impressive at Evolution, and they got on the same page as evidenced by The Queen saving Bliss from a Spear at the hands of Zaria.
In the weeks prior to Evolution, Bliss had several conversations with Flair backstage on SmackDown in an apparent effort to help Charlotte find herself. The Queen was resistant at first and seemingly had no interest in joining forces with The Goddess.
Despite that, Bliss pulled some strings to potentially get her and Charlotte a tag team title opportunity. Flair initially turned it down, but when she realized it was her ticket to Evolution, she changed her mind.
Alexa and Charlotte beat The Secret Hervice and the team of Michin and B-Fab to qualify for the women's tag team title Fatal 4-Way at Evolution, and they made some major progress even though they didn't win the championships.
On an episode of SmackDown following Evolution, Flair beat Rodriguez in a singles match when Bliss counteracted Perez's attempt to interfere, leading to another title shot at SummerSlam.
Their second opportunity was a charm, as Charlotte and Alexa defeated Rodriguez and Perez at SummerSlam to win the WWE Women's Tag Team Championships together for the first time.
