James Cook Expected to Practice with Bills amid Contract Rumors, Says Sean McDermott

Doric SamJul 23, 2025

Buffalo Bills running back James Cook showed up for the start of training camp rather than holding out for a new contract, and it appears that he will be active when the team takes the field.

Bills head coach Sean McDermott told reporters on Wednesday that he expects Cook to participate in practice this week.

"I had a chance to look in his eyes yesterday, and he’s ready to go," McDermott said.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported on Tuesday that Cook will be in attendance for the start of Bills training camp this week but added that "it remains to be seen how involved he’ll be on the field." The 2022 second-round pick is entering the final year of his rookie deal and will make just $5.7 million this season, and he made it clear that he wants a new contract.

Despite his desires for a new deal, Cook has maintained a professional approach this offseason. He was in attendance for offseason workouts and fully participated in Buffalo's mandatory minicamp last month, showing that he's committed to helping the team chase a Super Bowl title.

Cook has emerged as a key part of the Bills offense and one of the best running backs in the NFL. In 2024, he rushed for 1,009 yards and a league-high 16 touchdowns. He also added 32 catches for 258 yards and two more scores as Buffalo won its fifth straight AFC East title and advanced to the AFC Championship Game.

The Bills have already extended the contracts of three other members of their 2022 draft class, so Cook's new deal will likely be next on the agenda.
