Kyren Williams Reports to Rams Camp, Not Planning Hold-In amid Contract Rumors
As Kyren Williams continues to wait for a new contract, he did join the rest of his Los Angeles Rams teammates in reporting to training camp on Tuesday.
The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue noted Williams rolled onto the facilities on a scooter. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport added the star running back is considered a hold-in candidate to avoid being fined while he waits to get a deal done, though Williams poured some cold water on that notion when speaking to reporters:
Both Williams and the team spoke optimistically during the offseason about the potential for a long-term deal to get done.
Rams head coach Sean McVay told reporters last month he was encouraged by where talks were between the team and Williams' representatives.
"There’s been a lot of back and forth. There’s been some good proposals on both sides," McVay said. "We are getting closer to hopefully finding a conclusion to this. Now, until that’s actually agreed upon from both sides, we’re really in the same boat."
Williams told Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times on May 19 he was "feeling good" and that "it's going to happen" in time.
Since McVay's comments, though, there hasn't been much of an update on where things stand. Negotiations can change in a hurry now that everyone has reconvened for the start of training camp.
But there's also the question of figuring out Williams' value to the Rams. He has been the go-to back for the past two years, ranking third among all running backs in carries (544), rushing yards (2,443) and tied for second in rushing touchdowns (26) since the start of 2023.
Despite setting career-highs in rushing attempts (316), rushing yards (1,299) and rushing touchdowns (14) last season, Williams' efficiency did take a dip from 2023. He averaged 4.1 yards per carry with a 50.9 percent success rate, down from 5.0 and 59.6 percent the previous year.
Williams also fumbled five times on 350 touches, two more than in the previous two seasons combined on 304 touches.
The 2025 season marks the final year of Williams' rookie deal. He will earn $5.3 million in base salary.
