Jadeveon Clowney 'Still Planning to Play' in 2025 NFL Season Amid Free Agency

Taylyn Hadley Jul 21, 2025

Free agent Jadeveon Clowney is “still planning” to play in the 2025 season and has been in contact with “four or five teams,” according to NFL insider Josina Anderson.

"I'm still planning to play this season," Clooney told Anderson on Monday.

Following teams’ training camps, they’ll have a better idea of what they need and what they have, per Anderson.

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans, Clowney spent five seasons with the team, recording 11 passes defended, five forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries — two of which he returned for touchdowns. He also tallied 29 sacks, 205 combined tackles, 64 tackles for loss and 67 quarterback hits.

Since his time in Houston, Clowney has bounced around the league, spending six seasons with Cleveland, Baltimore, Carolina, Seattle and Tennessee.

Last season with the Carolina Panthers, he recorded 24 solo tackles, 5.5 sacks and four passes defended.

The 32-year-old pass rusher was released by the Panthers with one year remaining on his contract. He told The Athletic’s Joe Person that while he saw it coming, it didn’t make it any easier.

“I went to OTAs Day 1 and they kinda told me they weren’t expecting me to be there. I got a sense then they wanted me out of the building,” Clowney said. “I was just like, ‘Y’all could’ve told me this back when I was coming in here during the offseason.’ I kinda had a sense, though. I’ve been around the game long enough to know, so I was OK.”

With conversations “intermittently going” between a handful of teams, the linebacker appears likely to return for his 12th NFL season.
