Lil Wayne walked out with Dustin Poirier for his retirement fight against Max Holloway at UFC 318 on Saturday night in New Orleans.
Saturday represented a big moment for both Louisiana natives at the Smoothie King Center. Poirier was born and raised in Lafayette, about a two-hour drive west of New Orleans. Lil Wayne was born and raised in New Orleans, so the Crescent City was rocking as Poirier strode to the Octagon in hopes of claiming Holloway's BMF title.

Poirier entered the evening with a 30-9 record (plus one no-contest), knocking out 15 of his opponents and submitting eight others.
His biggest accomplishment in the Octagon was winning the interim UFC Lightweight Championship via unanimous decision in April 2019 at UFC 236. That bout earned Fight of the Night honors.
Poirier lost the belt in his next fight in Sept. 2019 to Khabib Nurmagomedov, who ended his career with a perfect 29-0 record. He fought twice more for the lightweight belt in Dec. 2021 at UFC 269 versus Charles Oliveira and June 2024 against Islam Makhachev at UFC 302, but he fell both times.
Poirier is a 10-time Fight of the Night winner and four-time Performance of the Night victor.
In addition, he's tied with three Jon Jones, Georges St-Pierre and Amanda Nunes for the most finishes against current, former or future UFC Champions with six.
For Poirier, those fighters are Conor McGregor (two finishes), Holloway, Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje and Anthony Pettis.
Needless to say, Poirier has a tremendous resume and will someday find himself in the UFC Hall of Fame conversation. And as his career winds down, he received a fond farewell for his lifetime efforts back in his home state.
