British Open Leaderboard 2025 Review of Top Scorecards and Player Stats on Day 3

Joe TanseyJul 19, 2025

Scottie Scheffler pulled away from the field on Saturday at The Open Championship.

The No. 1 golfer in the world sits in a terrific position to win his fourth major title on Sunday.

Scheffler used a four-under round to get 14-under for the tournament. He holds a four-shot lead over Haotong Li.

Matt Fitzpatrick failed to keep pace with Scheffler in the final group. He is in danger of losing more places on Sunday with Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele and others close behind.

McIlroy and Schauffele were two of six players who shot five-under or better on Saturday, but all of those players still need to make up plenty of strokes on Scheffler.

Scottie Scheffler Pulls Away With Strong Round

Scottie Scheffler played mistake-free golf to extend his advantage at Royal Portrush.

Scheffler recorded a pair of birdies and an eagle at the seventh hole to create the separation going into Sunday.

The impressive round gave him the 54-hole lead. He is 3-for-3 in majors when he owns the lead after the third round. The latest win came at the 2025 PGA Championship.

The most impressive part of Scheffler's round was the steady hand he displayed. He had a bogey-free round on a day when the rest of the players in the final groups had up-and-down rounds.

Matt Fitzpatrick Struggled to Keep Pace

The 153rd Open - Day Three

Matt Fitzpatrick struggled to keep pace with Scheffler in Saturday's final pairing.

The one-time major winner stumbled out of the gates with a bogey on the first round. He then eagled the second hole, a series of events that predicted the day ahead for the Englishman.

Fitzpatrick had two birdies in his round, but he bogeyed three additional holes after the first to drop a shot to nine-under for the tournament.

He now has a five-shot gap to Scheffler that seems insurmountable with the way the leader is playing.

Anything can happen in the final round of a major, but it seems like Fitzpatrick missed his chances to pounce on Saturday to put even some pressure on his playing partner.

Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele Turn in Low Rounds

4 of 4
The 153rd Open - Day Three

Before the Scheffler show went into full effect at Portrush, Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele made big moves up the leaderboard.

McIlroy used a five-under round to move up to eight-under for the tournament. He began the day with three birdies on the first four holes.

McIlroy carded a single bogey at No. 11. He immediately responded to that with an eagle at the 12th. He received one more large roar from the crowd with a birdie on No. 15.

Schauffele, the reigning Open champion, put together a five-under round to move within seven shots of Scheffler.

Schauffele used a pair of eagles on par fives at the seventh and 12th holes to surge up the leaderboard.

Both players must produce similar scores on Sunday and for Scheffler to look mortal to have a shot at the Claret Jug.

At minimum, McIlroy and Schauffele can go out on Sunday afternoon and try to put a little pressure on Scheffler with low scores on the opening holes.
