Rory McIlroy Unearths 2nd Ball During Shot From Rough in 2025 British Open Video

Rory McIlroy pulled off an unexpected and accidental trick during a shot from the rough on the 11th hole at the Open Championship on Saturday.

During the third round of the 2025 British Open at Royal Portrush Golf Club in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, McIlroy blasted a shot out of the rough, which also resulted in a second ball popping out of the rough:

While McIlroy's ball advanced closer to the hole, a spectator claimed the ball that McIlroy's was apparently resting on:

"That is the most weird, ridiculous thing I have ever seen," McIlroy told NBC's Roger Maltbie (h/t Fox News' Ryan Canfield).

McIlroy went on to card his first bogey of the day on the par-four 11th, but he rebounded with an eagle on the par-five 12.

With the eagle, McIlroy moved into a tie for sixth place in the tournament at seven-under, six shots behind leader Scottie Scheffler.

McIlroy, 36, completed the career Grand Slam back in April when he finally won the Masters.

The Northern Irishman had fallen just short on multiple occasions, and he blew a lead in the final round, which resulted in him having to go to a playoff with Justin Rose.

While Rose had the momentum on his side after birdying six of his final eight holes, McIlroy rose to the occasion in the playoff with a birdie to finally capture the green jacket.

That marked McIlroy's fifth career major title overall and his first since 2014.

After winning the Masters, McIlroy had some struggles, finishing tied for 47th at the PGA Championship, missing the cut at the Canadian Open and finishing tied for 19th at the U.S. Open.

He has seemingly found his game again lately, though, finishing tied for sixth at the Travelers Championship and tied for second at the Scottish Open leading up to the Open Championship.

McIlroy has a big job ahead of him in terms of closing the gap between himself and Scheffler for the remainder of the third round and during Sunday's fourth round, but he at least has himself in the mix.
