Cody Rhodes Beats John Cena to Win WWE Title at SummerSlam After Loss at WrestleMania
Cody Rhodes defeated John Cena in a Street Fight in the main event of Night 2 of SummerSlam on Sunday to regain the Undisputed WWE Championship and avenge his loss at WrestleMania 41.
Brock Lesnar then closed out the show by making his return to confront Cena.
While they were once friends, everything came crumbling down between Rhodes and Cena at Elimination Chamber after Cena won the Elimination Chamber match to earn a title shot against The American Nightmare at WrestleMania 41.
Rhodes was confronted by The Rock and rapper Travis Scott afterward, as the time had come for him to decide whether he would sell his soul to The Final Boss.
Once Rhodes refused, Cena attacked him at The Rock's behest, shockingly turning him heel for the first time in over 20 years.
At WrestleMania, Rhodes put the title on the line against Cena in the main event of Night 2. Many expected The Rock to get involved, but he didn't. Instead, Scott showed up and provided enough of a distraction for Cena to capitalize, win and become a record-breaking, 17-time world champion.
From that point forward, Rhodes was laser-focused on getting back into championship contention and winning back the title he worked his entire career to secure.
At Money in the Bank, Rhodes teamed with Jey Uso in a winning effort against Cena and Logan Paul, and the match ended with Cody pinning Cena after interference from Ron "R-Truth" Killings.
Then, Rhodes entered the King of the Ring tournament since the winning prize was a world title match at SummerSlam.
The American Nightmare beat Damian Priest, Shinsuke Nakamura and Andrade in a Fatal 4-Way in the first round, followed by defeating Jey Uso in the semifinals and Randy Orton in the finals to become King of the Ring and the No. 1 contender for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
A couple of weeks before SummerSlam, the contract signing for the Rhodes vs. Cena match was held on SmackDown.
Claiming mental and physical exhaustion, Cena refused to sign the contract and attempted to back out of SummerSlam, but Rhodes had other ideas.
He attacked Cena, grabbed his hand and made him sign the contract, thus making their rematch official.
Rhodes got his long-awaited revenge at SummerSlam by winning back the WWE title, while Cena now appears to have Lesnar to contend with.
