
Jaroslav Halak Retires at Age 40, Last Played with Rangers in 2022-23 NHL Season
Longtime NHL goalie Jaroslav Halák officially announced his retirement from hockey at the age 40 on Friday, according to TSN.
Halák played for the Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues, Washington Capitals, New York Islanders, Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers over the course of a 17-year NHL career that ran from 2006 to 2023.

In 581 career regular-season appearances, including 539 starts, Halák went 295-189-69 with a 2.50 goals-against average, .915 save percentage and 53 shutouts.
Halák also excelled during postseason play, making 39 appearances and starting 37 games for the Habs, Blues, Isles and Bruins. He posted a 17-20 record with a 2.48 GAA and .919 save percentage.
During the Canadiens' surprising run to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2010, Halák made 18 playoff starts, registering a 2.55 GAA and .923 save percentage.
Halák's most successful season came in 2014-15 when he started a career-high 59 games for the Islanders. He won a career-high 38 games that season to go along with a 2.43 GAA, .914 save percentage and six shutouts en route to his only All-Star selection.
The 38 wins still stand as a single-season record for a goalie in the storied franchise history of the Islanders.
Halák is also a two-time winner of the William M. Jennings Trophy given annually to the goalie or goalies who appeared in at least 25 games for the team that allowed the fewest goals in the league.
Brian Elliott and Halák shared it with the Blues in 2012, and Halák and Tuukka Rask shared it with the Bruins in 2020.
Over the course of his career, Halák represented Slovakia on the international stage on multiple occasions as well.
He was Slovakia's starting goaltender at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, leading the team to the bronze medal game where it lost to Finland.
Halák won a silver medal for Slovakia at the 2003 U18 World Championship and a silver medal as a member of Team Europe at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey as well.
Prior to officially stepping away from the sport on Friday, Halák had not played professional hockey in two years. His last on-ice action came as a backup with the Rangers during the 2022-23 season when he went 10-9-5 with a 2.72 GAA and .903 save percentage.
