Manny Pacquiao Says Jake Paul Has 'Talent,' Can Fight in 'Real Boxing Match'

Jake Paul's boxing career has generated some polarizing reactions, but one legend of the sport feels he has the potential to be better than what he's shown so far.

During an appearance on Wednesday's episode of The Ariel Helwani Show, boxing icon Manny Pacquiao was asked about his thoughts on Paul, and he chose not to join his ever-growing list of detractors.

"He has a talent," Pacquiao said of Paul. "He can fight in a real boxing match, so he can be a boxer."

Paul most recently defeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. by unanimous decision to improve to 12-1 as a boxer. After the win, he was added to the WBA rankings as the No. 14 cruiserweight, officially making him eligible to challenge for a title.

When asked if Paul has earned his respect, the 46-year-old responded, "Yes." However, Pacquiao went on to add that Paul's tendency to face lesser opponents or fighters well past their prime has hurt his perception in boxing.

"It's not good for the boxing industry to always have exhibitions," Pacquiao said. "Exhibition matches are OK, but not always exhibitions, you need to have a real fight to entertain the fans."

Pacquiao is set for his first fight since August 2021, as he will challenge Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight championship on Saturday in Las Vegas.
