Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence Says He's Entering His 'Prime,' 'I Need to Really Turn It On'

Adam WellsJul 15, 2025

Heading into his fifth NFL season, Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence feels like he is ready to take the next step in his career.

Appearing on the Pardon My Take podcast (h/t NFL.com's Kevin Patra), Lawrence explained he's just starting to enter his "prime years" and "I need to really turn it on" to help the Jaguars get back to the playoffs:

"I feel like this is like getting into my prime," said Lawrence. "I got a lot of good years left ahead of me, and I need to really turn it on. And I think what we've built around me and what they've done this offseason has been a great start."

Lawrence has been hard to figure out since entering the NFL as the No. 1 pick in the 2021 draft. His rookie year was a disaster through no fault of his own because the Urban Meyer destroyed everything else the Jaguars were hoping to do.

The 2022 campaign looked like Lawrence was on his way to entering the tier of elite-level quarterbacks that he was expected to be coming out of Clemson. He threw for 4,113 yards, 25 touchdowns to help the Jaguars win the AFC South.

Jacksonville's playoff game against the Los Angeles Chargers was the best and worst of Lawrence. The Jags were down 27-0 in the second quarter after Lawrence threw four first-half interceptions.

In the second half, Lawrence threw three of his four touchdown passes to engineer a 31-30 victory in the fifth-largest comeback win in NFL history.

Over the past two seasons, though, Lawrence ranks 16th in passing yards (6,061), 20th in passing touchdowns (32) and tied for ninth in interceptions (21). He also missed seven games last season due to a shoulder injury and concussion.

This offseason has felt like the Jaguars making a more concerted effort to help Lawrence reach his full potential. They hired Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen as head coach after he helped Baker Mayfield put up the best season of his career in 2024.

New general manager James Gladstone made his first big move during the draft by trading up to acquire the No. 2 overall pick and select Travis Hunter. The 2024 Heisman winner is expected to continue playing on both sides of the ball like he did throughout his college career.

Pairing Hunter and Brian Thomas Jr., who had 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns as a rookie, gives the Jaguars one of the most exciting young receiver duos in the NFL entering this season.

The offensive line is still a work-in progress, but the combination of coaching and those two wide receivers gives Lawrence a lot of reasons to be optimistic. He's still only 25 years old, so there is still plenty of runway ahead of him to reach the levels of greatness that were expected when he first entered the NFL.
