Cal Raleigh Jokes He Paid Kid Who Robbed Junior Caminero HR at Derby in Viral Video

Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh won the Home Run Derby on Monday, but one of the most notable moments of the event came when he wasn't even batting.

One of the children shagging fly balls in the outfield during the competition leapt up at the wall and caught a would-be home run off the bat of finalist Junior Caminero of the Tampa Bay Rays. While the officials ended up counting it as a home run since it would have cleared the fence, it was still a shocking moment.

"I paid him off," Raleigh told reporters when joking about the moment.

Even the Mariners had some fun with it on social media:

Cody Stavenhagen of the Athletic noted the fielder's name is Sam Musterer.

"I wasn't quite aware of where I was on the fence," Musterer said. "I thought the fence was a little taller there. I kind of just reached up and grabbed it."

While the home run counted, Caminero still fell short with 15 long balls in the final. Raleigh launched 18 to become the first catcher to win the Home Run Derby and second Mariners player to do so after Ken Griffey Jr. accomplished the feat three times during his legendary career.

It was a family affair Monday, as Raleigh's father, Todd, pitched to him while his brother, Todd Raleigh Jr., caught behind the plate and provided some ongoing encouragement to the eventual victor throughout the event.

It was all the more notable that he won because he was nearly eliminated in the first round.

He tied Brent Rooker with 17 home runs, which was good enough for fourth place among the eight competitors. The top four advanced, and Raleigh was awarded the tiebreaker because his longest home run traveled less than one foot further than Rooker's.

The Mariners star took full advantage of the opportunity he was given by that ruling and went on to win the entire competition.

He also had a field-level view of the best catch of the evening when his fellow finalist was at the plate.
