Kirk Cousins Says He Felt 'Misled' by Falcons' Michael Penix Jr. Pick in 'Quarterback'

Joseph ZuckerJul 8, 2025

Kirk Cousins understandably wasn't thrilled when the Atlanta Falcons used a first-round selection to get Michael Penix Jr. in the 2024 NFL draft.

The four-time Pro Bowler provided his candid opinions in the first episode of Netflix's Quarterback series, which dropped Tuesday. He said he felt "a little bit misled" by Atlanta, per ESPN's Marc Raimondi.

"Certainly, if I had the information around free agency, it certainly would've affected my decision," he said. "I had no reason to leave Minnesota with how much we loved it there if both teams are going to be drafting a quarterback high. But I've also learned in 12 years in this league that you're not entitled to anything. It's all about being able to earn your spot and prove yourself."

Cousins signed a four-year, $180 million contract with the Falcons in March 2024. By giving him $100 million guaranteed, the franchise seemed to be signaling he'd be the starter for at least a few years.

Covering their bases in the draft made sense when the 36-year-old was coming off a torn Achilles from the previous season. But fans were just as stunned as Cousins when NFL commissioner called Penix's name with the No. 8 pick.

Now, he is having to adjust to life as a full-time backup after Penix took over for the final three games of the 2024 campaign.

Raimondi wrote that Atlanta believes Cousins is "worth more to the team as Penix's backup than playing for someone else, especially since the Falcons are on the hook for $27.5 million of his salary this season either way."

The experienced veteran continues to say the right things publicly amid a difficult situation.

Cousins' comments on Quarterback offer some insight into his true thoughts into his present predicament.
