Lando Norris gave his compatriots something to cheer about Sunday as he held off Oscar Piastri to win the British Grand Prix at Silverstone Circuit.

This is the 25-year-old's first victory in his home race.

Lewis Hamilton nearly joined his countryman on the podium. He came in fourth behind Nico Hülkenberg, who claimed a podium position for the first time in his Formula One career.

It didn't take long for the wet conditions at Silverstone to become a factor. The yellow flag came out on the opening lap after Liam Lawson spun out and hit the wall thanks to contact from Esteban Ocon.

Lawson wasn't the only driver who was forced into the garage. Franco Colapinto, Gabriel Bortoleto, Isack Hadjar and Kimi Antontelli all retired in the early stages.

The most dramatic moment came on Lap 21, when Max Verstappen briefly lost control coming around a turn. Although he eventually regained his bearings, he fell from second to ninth.

Verstappen's misfortune resulted partially from some gamesmanship by Piastri. Once the safety car pulled away on the restart, the Australian slowed the pace to a crawl before accelerating to full speed. Race officials levied a 10-second penalty, which Piastri eventually served on a pit stop inside the final 10 laps.

That allowed Norris, the de facto leader while running in second place, to take his rightful spot atop the leaderboard.

Piastri undoubtedly paid a high price for his safety car stratagem. On balance, he still came out on stronger footing in the battle for the drivers' championship with Verstappen winding up in fifth.

The conclusion of the British Grand Prix represents the halfway mark of the 2025 F1 season. Twelve more races remain on the calendar.

The Belgian Grand Prix at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps is the next stop on July 27. Hamilton prevailed at Spa-Francorchamps last year and his five wins are tied for the second-most all time at the track. Maybe this is where he collects his first checkered flag with Ferrari.
