Flau'jae Johnson Fuels United States Win
On the nation's birthday, the United Sates rolled to victory in the first game of the day, steamrolling the Dominican Republic by 66 to advance to the FIBA Women's AmeriCup semifinals.
Johnson starred for the Americans, hanging 22 points, seven rebounds and two assists on the opposition while shooting 66.7 percent from both the paint and beyond the arc.
She was the best player on a vastly superior team that also saw a big day from Hannah Hidalgo (17 points, nine assists) and Hannah Stuelke (10 points, eight rebounds).
The United States is a favorite to win the entire tournament and having the highest-scoring offense in the field doesn't hurt. They are also a top three-point shooting team, making them dangerous from downtown.
Neighbors to the north, Canada, are their greatest threat to secure their first AmeriCup since 2021, but the team's ability to score early and often, overwhelming the opposition and forcing them to play catch-up, makes it difficult to imagine a team in this tournament that can keep pace.
Especially when Johnson, limited to just eight points in her four previous appearances in the tournament, can explode for the output that she did Friday.
It will be put to the test when the US and Canada battle in the semifinals Saturday.
