Yankees Reportedly Making Calls for 3B Help Ahead of 2025 MLB Trade Deadline

The New York Yankees are "starting to make calls" as the team searches for a third baseman prior to the July 31 trade deadline, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. has spent time at third base for New York this season, posting an impressive .829 OPS across 56 games.

The Yankees "know he belongs at second," though (via Heyman).

Chisholm discussed his alternating infield positions on Tuesday, as he's fared better defensively at second.

“Everybody knows I’m a second baseman,” Chisholm said, per Chris Kirschner of The Athletic. “Of course, I want to play second base, but whatever it takes to help the team win. If that’s what the team chooses, that’s what I gotta do. I don’t write the lineups. You feel me?"

“I’m playing every day, so it’s hard to be upset," he added. "Yes, I know I’m a second baseman. Yes, I know I’m better at second base, but at the end of the day, I still have to play third. I just have to deal with it.”

DJ LeMahieu has also started at third base this season, but struggled at the plate. The three-time All-Star is slashing .254/.333/.331 in 41 appearances to open his 2025 campaign.

Per Heyman, New York has reached out to the Colorado Rockies regarding the availability of third baseman Ryan McMahon. The 2024 All-Star ranks No. 8 among all third basemen with 0.7 Defensive WAR this season.

The Yankees are currently tied for first place in the American League East with a 48-38 record, although they've won just seven of their past 20 games.
