Diego Luna, USMNT Applauded by Fans in Win vs. Guatemala to Reach Gold Cup Final
The United States Men's National Team is on its way to the CONCACAF Gold Cup Final after beating Guatemala 2-1 on Wednesday.
After beating Costa Rica in penalties on Sunday, the USMNT played another hard fought match in the semifinal.
Diego Luna gave the United States an early edge, scoring his first goal in the fourth minute.
He added another in the 15th minute off an assist from Malik Tillman to give the U.S. an early 2-0 lead.
After a slow half for both teams offensively, Guatemala got on the board with a goal from Olger Escobar in the 80th minute. Guatemala had several good looks at goal in the final minute, but the United States ultimately held strong on defense to secure the win.
Luna, who made his USMNT debut earlier this year, has had a strong showing in the Gold Cup so far and is making a strong case to be on the team's World Cup roster next year. Wednesday's performance only helped his case. Fans are excited for the young player to become a mainstay of the roster for years to come.
With Wednesday's win, the United States will now have a date with either Mexico or Honduras in the Gold Cup Final on Sunday. It will be the 13th appearance for the USMNT in the Gold Cup Final, and they're looking for their eighth win in the tournament final.
