Tyler Shough 'Optimistic' About Completing Saints Rookie Contract Before Training Camp

Taylyn Hadley Jul 2, 2025

New Orleans Saints rookie quarterback Tyler Shough said he’s “super optimistic” about finalizing a fully guaranteed rookie contract ahead of training camp.

“The whole second round, [we’re] just seeing kind of where things lie,” Shough told Matthew Paras of The Times-Picayune. “There’s not like a demand or — obviously, you’re super optimistic. That’s just part of it, this whole process, so yeah, we’ll see.”

The No. 40 overall pick out of Louisville knows that securing a fully guaranteed contract is top of mind for every second-round selection heading into training camp later this month. After being drafted ahead of several high-profile quarterbacks — including Shedeur Sanders, Jalen Milroe and Dillon Gabriel — Shough has a strong case to land one.

For now, the quarterback remains locked in on competing for the starting job in New Orleans, as he battles it out with Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener.

“I want to fight for as much as we can get, but at the same time, there’s a lot of things that have yet to unfold with other guys ahead [of me],” Shough said, per Paras. “For me, the biggest thing was getting here, learning the playbook and doing everything I can.”

The Saints will open their season at home against the Arizona Cardinals on Sept. 7.
