Coco Gauff Loses to Yastremska, Updated Wimbledon Women's Tennis Bracket, Results

Andrew PetersJul 1, 2025

Coco Gauff's time at Wimbledon is over after just one round.

Gauff, the No. 2 seed who is coming off a title at Roland-Garros, lost to Dayana Yastremska 7-6 (3), 6-1 in the first round on Tuesday. Gauff is now just the third player in women's singles history to lose in the first round at Wimbledon after winning the French Open.

Yastremska came out on fire and never cooled down, looking more like the higher seed despite not being seeded at all. She had an answer for nearly every move Gauff made in the first set.

By the second set, Gauff appeared frustrated, struggling with her serves and making poor decisions throughout. Gauff finished with 29 unforced errors, just six winners and nine double-faults.

Yastremska is still searching for her first major title after reaching the semifinal at the Australian Open last year, and the momentum from taking down Gauff might be enough to start a Cinderella run at Wimbledon.

Yastremska had high praise for her opponent after the match.

"Playing against Coco, it's something special," she said. "We've played together three times, now four. It's 3-1 for her. She's a great player and a great person. ... These courts are made for the greatest players, so I'm very grateful to be on this court."

The first round has seen plenty of upsets, as No. 3 Jessica Pegula, No. 5 Qinwen Zheng and No. 9 Paula Badosa all joined Gauff in her early exit.

Tuesday continued Gauff's struggles at Wimbledon. She has won the U.S. Open and French Open and has a semifinal appearance at the Australian Open, but she has yet to make it past Round 4 at Wimbledon.

But even with Tuesday's loss, Gauff has had a good year and has the chance to make it even better by winning the U.S. Open later this summer.
