Hall of Fame Tennis Championships 2015: Monday Scores, Results, Updated Schedule

Adam WellsJul 13, 2015

On the heels of a memorable Wimbledon tournament, 32 men's tennis players compete in a singles competition at the annual Hall of Fame Championships in Newport, Rhode Island.

American John Isner, who is coming off a third-round loss to Marin Cilic at the All England Club, holds the top seed in this year's tournament. Ivo Karlovic, Bernard Tomic, Jack Sock and Adrian Mannarino round out the top five.

Monday's six-match schedule was highlighted by Tomic taking on John-Patrick Smith and Karlovic going against Illya Marchenko.

Recap

The first major upset of the tournament happened right out of the gate, as Smith knocked off No. 3 seed Tomic in straight sets.

Tomic, who is just 22 years old, has never fulfilled the promise he showed after reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 2011. He's won singles titles in each of the last two years, though they have come in smaller events without the top players.

2014 ATP Claro Open ColombiaIvo Karlovic (7-6, 3-6, 7-6)
2013 Apia International SydneyKevin Anderson (6-3, 6-7, 6-3)

This would seem like the perfect championship for Tomic to contend in, but his struggles in 2015 have continued. His first-round exit marks the sixth time he's lost in a tournament this season without winning a match.

That loss does open the door for Karlovic, though the No. 2 seed did have to fend off a challenge by Illya Marchenko. Two tiebreaker sets out of the gate followed by a close 6-4 third set show that the gap between the top and bottom of this bracket isn't wide.

The 6'11" Karlovic has been an ace machine this season, as evidenced by his output in England, per Wimbledon on Twitter:

Yet Marchenko was able to keep Karlovic's serve largely in check, limiting him to 11 aces. Marchenko also saved break points twice in three attempts, but it wasn't quite enough for the 27-year-old still seeking his first singles win in a match outside the ATP World Tour 250 in 2015.

Steve Johnson, who is the only ranked American to play on Monday, had his own problems in the first set against Michael Berrer. He even touched on those problems after the match, per Ken Powtak of the Associated Press (via ABCNews.com).

"It showed a good bit of resilience on my part to come back," he said. "It wasn't looking so great for the first hour."

Once the California native got out of that opening set, he found his groove, losing just three games in the final two sets.

Tennis has fallen off a cliff in the United States. Isner, who hasn't won a title since July 2014, is the highest-ranked American at No. 18 and is the only one in the top 30. With Noah Rubin's loss to Tatsuma Ito and Jared Donaldson facing Austin Krajicek, the field dwindled rapidly after Monday.

The Hall of Fame Championships got off to a strong start with so many close matchups. Tuesday figures to feature more of the same as Isner takes his turn on the court. Tennis has had a dramatically strong year to this point, which is going to continue throughout the week in Rhode Island.
