The two champions got right into the action meeting in the middle for a few frenetic exchanges. That turned out to be a bad strategy for Oliveira. All it took was a lightning-quick right hand to find a home for Topuria to become the champion.
It wasn’t hard to find effusive praise for Topuria.
The victory not only made him a two-division champion, but also made him the first undefeated fighter to do it.
Topuria continues to make a strong case that he's the top pound-for-pound fighter in the sport right now.
Moving up to the lightweight division after putting away featherweight legends Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway in back-to-back fights is an epic run.
Topuria's move to 155 pounds is bad news for the rest of the lightweight division. He put together a 16-0 record while fighting as a featherweight, but actually feels better in his new weight class.
"I always had to suffer mentally (and) physically. This time, I have been able to enjoy the whole process," he told Simon Head of UFC.com. ahead of this bout. "I feel like I'm at 100 percent. My power is on point. My stamina is on point. Everything is on point. So I feel very, very powerful at this weight class. Of course, the guys are bigger, but I'm bigger also, and I have more power."
Topuria got a good look at what it will take to succeed at lightweight in Charlees Oliveira. Do Bronx is one of the most experienced fighters in the division and holds wins over Michael Chandler (twice), Justin Gaethje, Dustin Poirier and Tony Ferguson.
If this result was any indication, Topuria is set to create his own impressive list of vanquised lightweights.
