After being on opposing sides in numerous tag team matches, Omega and Okada met one-on-one for the first time in the main event of Wrestle Kingdom 11 in 2017 with Okada beating Omega in an instant classic to retain the IWGP Heavyweight Championship.
Later in the year at Dominion, Omega and Okada fought to a 60-minute, time-limit draw in a match widely considered to be among the best of all time.
At Dominion one year later, Omega and Okada completed their trilogy, and Omega finally got the better of his counterpart by defeating him to become IWGP world champ for the first time.
In 2019, Omega left NJPW and helped form AEW as one of the executive vice presidents. Okada remained in New Japan as the face of the company until last year when he signed with AEW as a free agent.
Okada surprisingly debuted as a heel in support of The Young Bucks, replacing Omega as a member of The Elite.
After retaining the Continental Championship at Worlds End back in December, Okada was confronted by his longtime rival in Omega, who returned to AEW programming after a lengthy bout with diverticulitis.
That foreshadowed a future match between them, and when Omega beat Konosuke Takeshita for the International Championship at Revolution in March, it became clear that a unification match against Okada was an inevitability.
Last month, Omega vs. Okada was made official for All In, and with Okada coming out on top, he is now arguably the No. 2 men's champion in the company behind only the AEW world champion.
