Charlie Coyle is on the move once again.

The Colorado Avalanche announced Friday that they traded Charlie Coyle and Miles Wood to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for a 2025 third-round NHL Draft pick, a conditional 2027 second-round pick and forward Gavin Brindley.

Coyle was dealt to the Avalanche at the deadline from the Boston Bruins. That package consisted of forward Casey Mittelstadt, prospect Will Zellers and a 2025 second-round pick. Coyle has one year remaining on his contract, with a $5.25 million cap hit.

The 33-year-old had 17 goals and 35 points in 83 games between Boston and Colorado in 2024-25. He had 13 points in 19 regular-season games for the Avalanche and had one goal in the playoffs.

He was acquired at a hefty price to bolster Colorado's center depth ahead of the playoffs. The team also acquired center Brock Nelson from the New York Islanders at the deadline in a move that appeared to be a rental. Instead, the Avalanche re-signed Nelson to a three-year, $22.5 million deal that pushed their salary cap space up against the maximum.

The Avalanche gained some much-needed room to potentially address a different area of need. Coyle, on the other hand, heads to a Columbus team in need of some veteran leadership.

The Blue Jackets went 40-33-9 in 2024-25 and just missed out on a postseason berth. They also entered the offseason with $40.4 million in cap space, per Spotrac. This means that adding Coyle's contract will barely rock the boat and he can potentially aid the development of promising young players like Adam Fantilli, Cole Sillinger and Kent Johnson.
